What are the new smart luggage rules?

In most cases, airlines now say that they will only allow smart luggage on board if you can remove the lithium-ion battery, which is a common battery used in everyday devices like laptops and mobile phones.

How does this apply to G-RO?

When we designed the G-RO carry-on, we anticipated potential changes like these in regulations and technology. That’s why G-RO is smart-optional - meaning our battery is in no way built into the bag. G-RO comes with a 10,000 mAh (37 watt-hour) power bank, which is packaged separately. This is the lithium-ion battery, and it is the only one used in conjunction with the bag. It can easily be connected or disconnected without any tools needed. In the event that you are asked about your smart bag, you can simply remove your battery and store it as the airline asks you to. Put simply, your G-RO has a removable lithium-ion battery and is compliant.

How do I remove the G-RO battery?

The power bank that comes with your G-RO is the lithium-ion battery. There are no other batteries in your bag. Some airline employees may be confused by the USB ports at the top of the bag, but a USB port IS NOT a battery - only a cable that connects a battery to a device. Here is a video demonstrating how to easily connect and remove your G-RO battery.

What can I do to prepare for my next trip?

New airline rules can be confusing not only to travelers, but also to airline employees. It will take time for all airline staff to fully understand the new policy as it is rolled out. That’s why we recommend that you keep your airline's stated rules easily accessible while traveling. That way, you have something to refer airline employees to if they raise an issue about your bag. Once they understand that the battery just needs to be removable, you can show them that this is the case with your G-RO. If they question the USB ports on your bag, you can prove that they do not function without the power bank connected by plugging in a phone and demonstrating that there is no charge. You should always check with your airline prior to traveling to ensure you understand its policy. Please note that Spirit Airlines is currently a source of confusion regarding smart luggage. We would advise not taking your G-RO on any Spirit flights.

As an example, here is Delta’s policy as of March 8, 2018:

Effective Jan 15, 2018 Delta will not accept smart bags with non-removable lithium-ion batteries as carry-on or checked baggage on any Delta mainline or Delta Connection flight. Customers checking a smart bag with a removable lithium-ion battery must remove it and take it with them into the cabin. Customers carrying-on a smart bag containing a removable lithium-ion battery must remove it from the designed enclosure prior to boarding the aircraft. Once the battery is removed from the bag’s designed enclosure, the battery may be placed inside the carry-on bag. The removable battery does not need to be carried separately from the smart baggage.
